EKINCIK, DALYAN & KAUNOS TRIP (OPTIONAL), SEMIZCE – Sunday
Gulet boats will sail early in the morning to arrive in Ekincik. After dropping the anchor in a peaceful bay Semizce, you will have the choice of either staying on board, or taking an optional trip to visit Dalyan and Caunos. The boat rental fee for Dalyan trip will be paid by our company but the entrance fees to national parks and lunch in Dalyan will be paid by our passengers. The passengers who would like to join Dalyan & Kaunos daily trip leave with a small fisherman boat at 10:00. Dalyan trip visits Iztuzu beach (famous Caretta Caretta beach), Dalyan River, hand feeding Caretta Carettas, Caunos antik city, Koycegiz and famous Mud Bath.
Kaunos was an important sea port, the history of which is supposed to date back till the 10th century BC. Because of the formation of Iztuzu Beach and the silting of the former Bay of Dalyan (from approx. 200 BC onwards), Kaunos is now located about 8 km from the coast. The city had two ports, the southern port at the southeast of Küçük Kale and the inner port at its northwest (the present Sülüklü Göl, Lake of the Leeches). The southern port was used from the foundation of the city till roughly the end of the Hellenistic era, after which it became inaccessible due to its drying out. The inner or trade port could be closed by chains. The latter was used till the late days of Kaunos, but due to the silting of the delta and the ports, Kaunos had by then long lost its important function as a trade port.
Iztuzu beach is a narrow spit of land, which forms a natural barrier between the fresh water delta of the Dalyan river and the Mediterranean. It is one of the main breeding grounds for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean and is therefore often referred to as “Turtle Beach”. The loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) is on the IUCN Red list of endangered animals. For this reason the beach has had a protected status since 1988 and is part of the Köyceğiz – Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area.
The daily trip ends at 18:00 heading back to Gulet boats. The night is spent in Semizce bay.
